Some don't understand the 5 stars and I don't understand the 1 star reviews. Is the book written simplistic, yes it is but that's not the point, for those who reviewed it one star are missing the point. The book does a great job of explaining what would be considered the eastern perspective of personal development and excellence that is greatly lacking in western culture. Like is about experiences, being present in the moment and developing your potential through good habits and repetition. I think people are being critical of the level it was written are too in their EGO to the point that they can't see the value in the chapters. Are there more difficult books, yes, A new Earth by Ekhart Tolle is the best book for identification of the ego and mental thought process from a philosophical perspective but this book is to the point in developing mastery of something in a way that is not overly complex and convoluted. One star for the attempt. If I wrote this book I would redact my name from its cover because it is so poorly written. Or at least not use my real name. The book is basically about a U.S. kid named John who you learn nothing about before he signs up for "samurai archer" school in Japan. His sensei teaches him to "enjoy the process" of becoming an archer by doing menial, basic tasks. Each chapter is like two pages and basically consists of John bitching that he isn't an archer yet and his sensei saying deal with it by offering up stories of triumph and dedication interlaced with modern references about golf, Navy Seals, NBA athletes, Ikea, Mother Theresa, etc. These references are completely unrealistic in the setting provided by the author. Chapter 4 and 5 start with the EXACT same sentence: "As the weeks passed, John grew more comfortable with life in the community." There is only a couple pages between them, how does the author or editor not fix this? Also there is a whole story about the Japanese sensei teaching the student that "INCHES" matter. Look man, Japanese people don't use freedom units, they use meters (centimeter here). Basic stuff. This book is an enormous waste of your money. It is not even worth the effort to return it, instead I will burn it in my wood stove so it can be removed from circulation. I am deeply disappointed the author shares the same first name as me and I hope he does the appropriate thing and makes this like a free e-book or children's book (The Giver, recommended for fifth graders, is immensely more complex and entertainin so perhaps put this at a second grade level?).These five star reviews...if this is a reflection of society there is no hope or God to save us.
